Paytm is now on Google Play Store: What led to the removal and how it got back

NEW DELHI: Payments and financial services app Paytm is now back on Google Play Store. The company in a tweet announced that it is back after Google had removed it earlier in the day without officially citing any reason.

The announcement of the app coming back to Google Play Store was made via Paytm’s official Twitter account where it said “Update: And we’re back!!”

Meanwhile, Paytm’s founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma also took to Twitter to explain briefly what really caused the internet search giant to remove the app.

In a tweet Sharma said, “Thanks everyone for your support! Paytm App is back, live in Play Store. We launched a UPI CashBack campaign this morning. Our app got suspended by Google for this. India, you decide if giving cash back is gambling.”

After Google removed Paytm app from Play Store, the company in a blog post had assured its users that their balances & linked accounts are completely safe.

Here is the complete blog post:

“We recently launched the ‘Paytm Cricket League’ on our consumer app for users to engage in their passion of cricket and get cashback. The game allows users to get player stickers after each transaction, collect them and receive Paytm Cashback.

Today afternoon, we received communication from Google that they are suspending our app because they believe this to be a violation of their Play Store policies on gambling. The Paytm Android app has thus been unlisted from Google’s Play Store and is temporarily unavailable to users for new downloads or updates.

While it is clear that all activities on Paytm are completely lawful, we have temporarily removed the cashback component in an effort to meet the Play Store policy requirements.

We continue to work with Google to restore the app. We assure all our users that their balances and linked accounts are 100% safe. Our services are fully functional on all existing apps and you can continue enjoying Paytm like before.”
